Tillage
The operation of agriculture implements through the soil for the preparation of seed bed. It helps loosen soil, incorporate fertilizers and leads to fine tilth aggregates. Inadequate crop stand is a major reason for low crop yields in rainfed areas. This is mainly because of the restricted entry of water into the soil due to improper tillage practices. Tillage in rainfed areas agriculture therefore aims at – Preparing a suitable seed bed; Controlling weeds; Conserving moisture; Establishing uniform initial stand; Increasing water intake; Covering large areas during the restricted sowing period using lesser amount of energy; and maintaining the soil surface conditions. Land treatment works out to be cost-effective in the long run because proper tillage is a low cost investment. All one needs is a suitable implement and labour. There are different types of tillage practices for different soil types. They include deep tillage, off-season tillage and shallow tillage.
