Rhizopus rot: Rhizopus stolonifer

Symptoms:

  • Irregular, water-soaked lesions which gradually enlarge and get covered by white and dark brown fungal growth and sporangiophores.  
  • The fruits become watery and emit a foul odour.
  • Papaya orchard and storage room are sources of inoculum.
  • Invasion occurs through wounds.
  • The rots rapidly destroys the entire fruit and quickly spreads to other fruits.
  • Fruit fly punctures after harvest increase the disease incidence

Management:

  • The disease can be checked by sorting the fruit at 100C or below but the rot appears after 2-3 days when such fruits are brought back to 200 C or above.
  • The disease can be controlled with DCNA dips at 1000-2000 ppm
  • Hot water treatment of fruits at 490C for 20 minutes can check the rot.
