Rhizopus rot: Rhizopus stolonifer
Symptoms:
- Irregular, water-soaked lesions which gradually enlarge and get covered by white and dark brown fungal growth and sporangiophores.
- The fruits become watery and emit a foul odour.
- Papaya orchard and storage room are sources of inoculum.
- Invasion occurs through wounds.
- The rots rapidly destroys the entire fruit and quickly spreads to other fruits.
- Fruit fly punctures after harvest increase the disease incidence
Management:
- The disease can be checked by sorting the fruit at 100C or below but the rot appears after 2-3 days when such fruits are brought back to 200 C or above.
- The disease can be controlled with DCNA dips at 1000-2000 ppm
- Hot water treatment of fruits at 490C for 20 minutes can check the rot.
