1. Farmer Overview:

Manivannan, a 57-year-old farmer with 35 years of farming experience, operates a 4.5-acre farm in Devarayapuram, Coimbatore district. He completed his education up to high school and lives in a nuclear family with his wife and a daughter, who is currently working. Over the years, Manivannan has successfully combined traditional agricultural knowledge with modern technological solutions to improve his farm's productivity and efficiency.

2. Agricultural Practices

Manivannan cultivates tomatoes on his farm, a crop that requires significant care due to its sprawling growth pattern. To support his tomato plants, Manivannan uses stakes, which help the plants grow upright and prevent the fruit from touching the ground. This technique ensures better air circulation around the plants, reduces the risk of diseases, and enhances the quality and quantity of the harvest.

3. Water Management Techniques

A notable feature of Manivannan’s farming approach is his use of drip irrigation and fertigation, advanced water management systems that improve both water and nutrient delivery to his crops. Drip irrigation provides water directly to the plant roots, reducing wastage and ensuring that the plants receive moisture consistently.

Through fertigation, Manivannan mixes fertilizers with water using a specialized machine. The nutrient-rich water is then passed through the drip irrigation system, providing precise and timely nourishment to his crops. This method significantly reduces manual labor while improving crop health and yields.

4. Technological Innovations

Manivannan has embraced modern technology to streamline his farming operations. One of his most notable innovations is the automation of various field activities, which he controls remotely via his mobile phone. With this system, he can operate the farm’s irrigation motor, regulate water flow, and manage other field operations without being physically present.

This smart farming solution gives Manivannan flexibility and convenience, especially when he is away from the farm. The ability to monitor and control water supply remotely has greatly enhanced his farm's efficiency, ensuring that his crops receive the necessary water even during his absence.

5. Wildlife Protection

Living near the foothills of a wildlife-prone region, Manivannan faces challenges from animals, particularly elephants, which often damage crops. To address this, he has installed a solar-powered fence around his farm. The fence delivers a mild electric pulse, effectively deterring animals from entering without causing harm. This innovation has helped safeguard his crops, ensuring minimal damage from wildlife.

6. Livestock Management

In addition to his crop farming, Manivannan maintains a herd of four cows. These cows not only provide milk for household consumption but also produce manure, which is used as an organic fertilizer for his farm. He grows fodder grass specifically for his cows, ensuring a sustainable and nutritious food supply for his livestock.

7. Sustainability and Future Prospects

Manivannan’s farming methods reflect his ability to adapt to changing agricultural practices while staying rooted in traditional knowledge. His use of automated systems, solar fencing, and efficient irrigation techniques has positioned him as a forward-thinking farmer. His commitment to innovation and sustainability allows him to maintain a productive farm while mitigating risks associated with wildlife and water management.

As Manivannan continues to integrate modern tools and technologies, he exemplifies how small- scale farmers can thrive by blending tradition with innovation.
