Chengavarkai (Mango –Red Shaded) The mangoes of Kanyakumari district are off season, a variety is considered to be the best as a whole. It is reddish in colour with round shape. The fruit is devoid of fibre content and possess ‘karkandu’ taste (Candy). It weight about 150-200g a single fruit. Fruits are not used for pickles and colling because it possesses thick pulp (flesh). The shelf life of the fruits is very good because of thick skin. Mostly the mango varieties of Kanyakumari district come to harvest in summer “chenkavarkai”, sonachi to some extend it may be extended upto July. Mango can be grown on a wide range of soils, but Kanyakumari possess deep well drained soils, clay loam are some places.
The varieties have not been popularized in other places of Tamil Nadu because of seed scarcity, preference by other people and varied climatic conditions. The traditional varieties are now under extinction, the seed material is kept for next crop stored as germplasm at concerned research stations. |
