Nattu Seeni kizhangu – Yams (Dioscorea spp)
The tubers are underground stem rich in starch and are usually single with various size and shape. Tubers are rich source of sucrose. A deep rich friable well drained sandy loam soil is ideal for development of tubers and it is prevailing in Malavlai village of Kanyakumari district. The proximal end of tubers are cut into pieces and dipped in cow dung slurry allowed to dry in shade. The cropping cycle is 8-10 months. The yield varies from 20-25 tonnes/ha. Yellowing and drying of leaves is the indication for harvesting the tubers.
