Karuppu Avarai – Black Beans
This is suited only for rain fed or upland cultivation. It is grown in Valeppur village of Namakkal district. The whole bean as well as the pod alone can be separated and used as vegetable. The method of cultivation is more similar to that of the ordinary bean cultivation. Generally, this crop can be raised thrice a year during May-June (Vaigasi) September-October (Purattasi) and January-February. It comes to bearing on third month onwards and the total duration of the crop is four months with an average yields about 2-3 kg. The major difference between black bean and white bean is the taste and energy which is comparatively higher in the earlier than the later.
